artificial plants in commercial spaces

Ordering artificial plants for a commercial space online looks straightforward until you're standing in front of a half-finished hotel lobby wall, three panels short, in a finish that was discontinued between your first and second order. Or, your fire inspector flags the installation because the decor doesn’t carry NFPA 701 documentation.

These are real scenarios, and unfortunately, we see them regularly. Yet, they’re all completely preventable if you have the right information from the start.

We've delivered commercial greenery installations for clients including BMW, Disney, Coca-Cola, Aperol, Facebook, and Westfield, and across hotels, restaurants, retail fit-outs, corporate campuses, and public venues.

What separates a successful commercial order from a costly one comes down to a handful of decisions made before anything goes in the cart.

Keep reading to find out how to make them correctly.

5 Steps to Buy Commercial Artificial Plants the Right Way

No two buying journeys for commercial spaces are the same. But, since our team has been in the business and the industry for over 20 years, we can attest to some approaches that yield better results than others.

If you want a step-by-step process of what to do before you buy your first artificial plants, follow this:

Step 1: Know your specs before browsing

The single biggest commercial purchasing mistake is leading with aesthetics and catching up on technical requirements later. In a residential context, you can afford that order of operations. In a commercial one, you can't.

Before you look at a single product, nail down three things:

  • Fire rating requirements: In the US, artificial greenery used in commercial settings is often required to meet NFPA 701 fire resistance standards. Our FireTex fire-resistant range is the only artificial greenery engineered with fire-retardant compounds built directly into the polymer at a molecular level, not a spray-on coating that degrades over time. We hold independently verified NFPA 701 lab reports, available on request. If your space requires fire-rated greenery, specify FireTex from the start; don't select a style and then ask if a fire-rated version exists.

  • UV requirements: For outdoor terraces, pool decks, rooftop bars, coastal venues, and any space with significant sun exposure, UV resistance is non-negotiable. All Designer Plants panels are engineered with integrated UVTex™ UV inhibitors built into the LDPE material. If any part of your installation is exposed to direct sun, UV-rated products are the specification.

  • Panel quantity and coverage: Calculate your wall area in square feet before you browse. Each of our standard commercial green wall panels covers 11 sq ft (40×40”). Divide your total wall area by 11 to get your panel count, then add 10% for trimming around obstacles. If you need help with coverage, use our how-to-install guide or book a free consultation before you order. Alternatively, you can use our handy panel calculator on each product page to get the measurements right from the start.

Step 2: Order a sample before committing

For any commercial order above 10 panels, order a physical sample first.

A monitor cannot accurately represent foliage density, color depth, or texture, and these are exactly the qualities that determine whether an installation reads as premium or falls short.

We offer samples from our commercial panel range at low costs ($10-15), delivered fast. Hold the sample against your wall surface under your actual lighting conditions and check the color against your finishes.

If you're specifying for a hospitality venue, place the sample in the intended location and photograph it; this step alone will confirm or redirect your choice before you spend on a large order.

For clients in Florida or California, you're also welcome to visit our warehouses in Medley, FL and Temecula, CA by appointment to view the range in person.

Step 3: Choose the right product category

Not all commercial spaces need the same product. Here's how we'd approach the most common scenarios:

  • Hotel and hospitality lobbies: The reception wall is where first impressions live. The Lush Spring and Country Fern panels are two of our most-specified options for hospitality environments Both are engineered from LDPE with RealTex™ and UVTex™ technology, backed by a 5-year UV warranty.

  • Restaurants and bars: Kitchen-adjacent walls need panels that can be cleaned easily and won't hold odours or moisture. Our commercial-grade LDPE panels wipe clean, require no maintenance, and don't absorb humidity, which is why they're a standard specification in restaurant fit-outs.

  • Outdoor commercial spaces: Rooftop bars, restaurant terraces, hotel pool decks, and retail forecourts all require UV-rated products as a baseline. Our Amazon Jungle panel, the most botanically complex in our ultra-luxury range, is a frequent specification for resort and hospitality outdoor installations where visual density and a tropical aesthetic are the design intent.

Step 4: Understand what you're buying

The commercial artificial plant market has a quality range that spans from panels that last 6 months to installations that still look identical over 5 years later. The difference isn't always obvious from a product photo. Here are two crucial things to look for:

  1. Material construction: Our panels are engineered from LDPE (low-density polyethylene), which is a material chosen for durability, UV stability, and recyclability. RealTex™ technology is integrated into the coloring process to match precise natural details: color variation, veining, surface texture, and new growth indicators.

  2. Warranty: Our commercial-grade panels carry a 5-year UV warranty that’s backed by actual lab testing, not a manufacturer's assurance. For indoor commercial installations, the expected product life exceeds 15 years.

Step 5: Place the order correctly

For commercial orders, a few practical points can prevent the most common fulfilment problems.

One of these is to order from a single batch when possible so that both you and our team can accurately track the delivery and set expectations from the beginning. For the best results, contact us at sales@designerplants.com before placing large orders to ensure consistency and access to commercial pricing.

Besides that, we recommend confirming delivery logistics before checkout. We ship from warehouses in Medley, FL and Temecula, CA via UPS and FedEx Ground, with free ground shipping across the US mainland. Standard delivery is 48 hours to one week, depending on location. For large orders with tight installation schedules, contact us to confirm dispatch timing before you place the order.

In the end, we suggest you factor in installation time. Our panels install via a snap-and-lock system using zip ties, staples, or screws to any wall surface, and you can trim them with scissors for custom fits. If your installation is large-scale or requires professional installation, our team can advise on installation partner options.

Finishing Thoughts

Buying artificial plants for a commercial space online is entirely manageable when you approach it in the right order: spec first, sample second, order third.

The mistakes that cost commercial clients time and money almost always happen when that sequence is reversed, i.e., a style is chosen before fire compliance is confirmed, or panels are ordered before a sample is assessed in the actual space.

We've been doing this since 2005. The installations we're most proud of all started with a conversation. That conversation is what the free consultation is for. It costs nothing, takes 30 minutes, and turns a high-stakes purchasing decision into a straightforward one.

FAQs

  1. Do commercial artificial plants need to be fire-rated in the US?

  • In most commercial spaces, fire-rated greenery is either required by code or strongly recommended by fire safety consultants. Requirements vary by state, building type, and occupancy. Designer Plants' FireTex range is NFPA 701-compliant, with independently verified lab reports available on request.

  1. How do I calculate how many panels I need for a commercial wall?

  • Multiply your wall's width by its height in feet, then divide by 11 (the square footage of each 40×40” panel). Add 10% for trimming. For multi-room or complex layouts, our free consultation includes a full coverage calculation.

  1. Can I order a sample before committing to a large commercial order?

  • Yes, and we strongly recommend it for any order over 10 panels. For clients in Florida and California, warehouse visits are also available by appointment.

  1. How long do commercial artificial plants last?

  • Indoor commercial-grade installations typically last 15+ years with minimal maintenance. Outdoor installations with UVTex™ integrated UV protection carry a 5-year UV warranty, but are likely to last far beyond that, as well.

  1. Can I get trade or volume pricing for large commercial orders?

  • Yes. Email sales@designerplants.com with your project brief, panel requirements, and timeline. Our team provides volume pricing and project-specific recommendations for commercial fit-outs of any scale.
