Picture your outdoor space exactly the way you want it. A balcony where you can sit with your morning coffee without the neighbors looking on. A backyard fence that's lush and green instead of bare and tired. A pergola that looks finished all year round. And you want it done this weekend, not 3 summers from now when something finally grows in.

That's why an expandable faux privacy fence is such a handy fix for homeowners, renters, condo owners, and event stylists across the US.

It opens up to fit your space, covers it in leafy foliage, and gives you privacy straight away, with no planting, no watering, and no pruning. It also stays green through summer sun and winter frost, which is a big help when building rules or weight limits rule out live plants.

Read on to see how it works, where it works best, and how to set it up so you get the full, leafy look you're picturing.

What is an Expandable Faux Privacy Fence?

An expandable faux privacy fence is a UV-resistant lattice covered in artificial ivy or foliage that stretches to fit an existing fence, wall, railing, or frame.

At Designer Plants, expandable screens use a diamond-lattice frame that opens from a compact shipping size up to 72 by 36”. Artificial foliage covers the lattice, so what you end up with looks like climbing ivy, jasmine, laurel, or ficus.

The frame and leaves are LDPE with a RealTex finish, and the UVTex inhibitors are bonded into the leaf instead of sprayed on the surface. That's why each screen carries a 5-year UV warranty. Each one weighs 9.7 lb, so one person can carry it without a fuss. Spread over full expansion, that's roughly half a pound per square foot.

A lot of people search for an artificial ivy privacy fence, and we get why. But that word "fence" sets the wrong expectation, so let's talk about the limits.

Can an expandable faux privacy fence replace a real fence?

An expandable faux privacy fence gives you privacy in minutes, but it’s not structural, a security, a pool barrier, and it’s not fire-rated (in most cases).

With that, you can fix it to something solid, check your local height and HOA rules, and use it as a screen on an existing frame. Expandable fences are not freestanding.

What an Expandable Faux Privacy Fence Isn't: 4 Limits to Know Before You Buy

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, here are 4 things an expandable faux privacy fence isn’t, so you know what to expect:

  1. It isn't freestanding

The lattice is a lightweight plastic frame with no posts, no footings, and no rigid rails. It needs something to hang on, like a fence, wall, railing, pergola, or frame, and you attach it with screws and washers or whatever else suits the surface.

  1. It isn't a security barrier

A screen you can cut with kitchen scissors is not going to stop anyone who really wants through. Think of it as a visual screen that gives you privacy and peace of mind only.

  1. It isn't a pool barrier

An open lattice can’t be a sturdy barrier. You can dress a compliant pool fence with a screen (here's how one client transformed a poolside fence with an artificial green wall), but check first that the lattice doesn't create footholds on the pool side, and confirm the details with your local pool inspector.

  1. It isn't fire-rated

This range isn't fire resistant, so keep it away from grills, fire pits and heaters. If your project needs fire-rated greenery, browse our fire-resistant artificial plants and have a look at the FireTex evidence.

When an Expandable Faux Privacy Fence Is the Right Choice

Once you've got something to attach it to, an expandable faux privacy fence is hard to beat. It's a great fit for:

  • Fence lines and boundary privacy. Get instant screening along an existing fence or boundary, with no planting, no watering, and no waiting for anything to grow. See how greenery lifted a plain boundary in our residential boundary wall and entrance project.

  • Balconies and terrace screening. Add privacy and character to balconies and rooftop terraces, where building regulations or weight limits often rule out live planting. The screen stretches to fit your run, and our balcony green wall solutions cover more ideas.

  • Pergola and arbor cover. Give pergolas and garden arches permanent foliage, with no annual tying, pruning, or replacing.

  • Rentals. Cable ties and staples come off without residue, so a screen suits a rental balcony. Of course, as with any modification, check your lease first.

  • Awkward gaps. Think of that odd space between a post and the wall, where a fixed panel simply won't go; that’s the perfect spot for an expandable faux privacy fence.

  • Event and temporary installations. It's a portable green screen for event stylists: quick to set up, light enough to move, and reusable across multiple events.

And if you'd like denser, permanent coverage, clip-together panels are the next step up.

Expandable Faux Privacy Fence vs Real Fence: 3 Situations and What We Recommend

Most situations fall into one of 3 buckets. See which one sounds like you.

  • You've got a tired fence and a nosy view. Say you've got an old fence, and your neighbor's upstairs window looks straight onto your patio. This is exactly what the expandable range is for. Fix a screen to the fence you already have, and the view is gone by the afternoon.

  • You've got an open boundary and nothing to attach to. If you’ve got a back boundary that’s a line of grass and a hopeful attitude, a screen alone will flop. Build a post-and-rail frame or put up a fence first, then attach the screen to it. If you want ideas for the next step, our guide on improving your fence's privacy with artificial plants is a good read.

  • A rule or a risk demands a real fence. Pools, security needs, and some HOA or zoning rules call for a proper fence. Put up the compliant one, then screen it if the rules allow.

How to Fix an Artificial Ivy Privacy Fence Against Wind

A lattice with leaves on it is light, but it still catches wind, and every gust pulls on your fixings. Our installation guide says to secure panels so wind and weather can't move them, and that matters even more with an open lattice. Our team emphasizes doing the following for a secure attachment:

  • Attach it to something solid. Timber posts and rails, metal frames, and masonry are great, but thin boards and floppy mesh are not.

  • Match the fixing to the surface. Use 10-inch UV zip ties on mesh and railings, and self-drilling screws and washers on metal, board, or masonry.

  • Use plenty of fixing points. On our green wall panels, we place a screw every 10” to keep things taut in the wind. We follow the same thinking with a lattice: fix along the top and bottom edges and at the joints to ensure the middle doesn’t flap.

  • Back up a wobbly fence. If your existing fence moves in the wind, add bracing first. On a thin metal fence, a timber backing frame also stops screws from poking through the other side.

  • Check your fixings each season. Replace any tie that looks brittle or loose.

Finishing Thoughts

If you have a fence, wall, railing or pergola and you want instant privacy, color and texture without waiting for anything to grow, an expandable faux privacy fence is one of the quickest ways to get there. Choose a foliage style you love, fix it securely to something solid, check your local rules, and you'll have a lush, private space that looks good in every season.

Our showrooms in Medley, Florida, and Temecula, California are open by appointment, and you can pull the lattice open yourself and see how the foliage looks in daylight.

And if you can't make it, send us a photo of your fence, wall, or railing with your measurements or book a free consultation with our team, and we'll tell you whether a screen, a roll, or a frame-first approach suits you best.

FAQs

  1. Can an expandable faux privacy fence replace a real fence?

  • In most cases, no. An expandable privacy fence is a screen that attaches to something that already stands. It’s not meant to stand alone, secure a boundary, or meet pool barrier rules.

  1. How long does an artificial ivy privacy fence last outdoors?

  • It depends on the quality of the material, the level of expertise of the installation, and the inclusion of UV resistance. At Designer Plants, UVTex inhibitors are bonded within the leaf, and the screens are frost-resistant with a 5-year UV warranty. How well you fix it decides whether it survives the wind, so don't skimp on fixing points.

  1. Can I cut an expandable faux privacy fence to fit?

  • Yes, you can trim the frame to fit odd widths and heights. For bigger or custom jobs, ask us for a free consultation or seek advice from professional builders and installers.

  1. Can I use an expandable faux privacy fence on a rental balcony?

  • Yes, because depending on the fixings and attachments, it can come off cleanly. However, before making any changes or buying any products, we implore you to check your lease and building rules to understand what you can or can’t add.

  1. How do I clean an artificial ivy privacy fence?

  • Dust it with a damp cloth and skip high-pressure water. Clean the fence regularly every few months or whenever you notice its luster fading. Check out our cleaning guide for deeper cleans and specific tools.
