By September, the summer setup on your porch or patio already feels like it belongs to a different month.

The light has shifted, the mornings are cooler, and everything that seemed fresh and vibrant in July now feels like it hasn't caught up. The instinct is to swap it all out, and it’s what most of your neighbors will be doing.

But not you, because you know better, and you know you don’t need to spend a load of cash to shift the tone in your space.

You know you have artificial plants as your foundation, and because you chose well, your greenery didn’t fade, drop leaves, or yellow during the summer.

So, you just decide to change the decor around your faux plants instead, and save a good bit of money on the way.

Here's how we advise clients to approach the summer-to-fall transition, and how you can do it in an afternoon.

The 5-Move Artificial Plant Summer-to-Fall Transition

A classic style is all about symmetry, form, and sophistication, i.e., aspects a well-chosen artificial green wall contributes to in any season. Our design experts always emphasize that:

“Your existing green wall panels, your potted plants, your hanging garlands don't need to go anywhere. They're the constant, and fall styling is the variable layer you're adding on top.”

This means that if you invest in quality UV-resistant greenery as a permanent installation first, and then style around it seasonally, you’ll get more out of it than you would with a seasonal plant sensitive to weather and temperature.

If your summer greenery is from our UV-resistant outdoor range, it's already proven itself through peak summer UV and will hold that look through fall and winter without any intervention.

So, here’s what you can do to make it better suited for fall:

1. Layer in fall accessories

The fastest seasonal shift on a porch or patio is the accessory layer. Luckily, fall has a recognizable visual language: pumpkins, lanterns, gourds, dried flowers, woven textures, warm metals. And chances are, you already have a fair few of them in your home.

We tell our clients to think of their faux greenery as the backdrop and fall accessories as the foreground. That can look like this:

  • A cluster of pumpkins at the base of a freestanding boxwood planter.

  • A pair of lanterns on either side of a panel-covered wall.

  • A dried corn husk wreath hung on top of a green wall installation.

In each of these examples, the greenery frames and anchors the accessories, and the accessories do the seasonal storytelling.

In the end, you get great fall decor without paying a penny over what you decided on as your threshold.

2. Swap your planters

If you’re open to spending a little on your decor, we recommend investing in a pot or a planter, as it communicates season as directly as any plant.

The pale sand-tone or bright white planter that fit right in during summer looks a bit too stark in fall’s warmer palette. A terracotta-toned planter, a deep concrete-grey, or a rich earth-tone imitation stone planter is what you need to fix that.

Moving the same UV-resistant plant from its summer planter into a warmer-toned one takes ten minutes and delivers a surprisingly contrasting result.

3. Add fall-toned faux stems

This is the move we see produce the most dramatic result for the least investment. A few fall-toned artificial stems (for as low as $14.95) threaded into an existing green wall panel or tucked into a potted arrangement shift the seasonal character of the whole installation.

Thread stems directly into the panel foliage by pressing them into the grid amid the foliage in your desired location. You don’t need to use glue or nails and a hammer, just outdoor-grade zip ties to secure the stems in place.

And then, if you decide that you’re not keen on the stems when winter rolls around, you can remove them and keep them stored for the next season that fits.

4. Introduce warm lighting

Summer evenings are long and bright, while fall evenings are earlier, darker, and warmer in mood. The lighting that served your outdoor space through summer won’t deliver the right atmosphere for fall entertaining, and this is a seasonal adjustment that costs almost nothing.

Align your decor with the burnt orange color palette by using warm amber string lights draped over an existing green wall panel, yellow lanterns at the base of a boxwood planter, or flame-effect outdoor candle holders beside a hanging garland.

Our team loves working with lighting for an installation, and our clients have been very creative when using lights, as we’ve seen:

Our design experts have this to say about lighting and fauxliege:

“This particular look suits various alfresco entertaining areas and outdoor wellness corners that make relaxation a priority. We want fall evenings on the porch to feel enclosed and warm, and lighting is the fastest way to achieve that.”

5. Reassess what's there before buying

Before adding (or buying) any fall elements, walk through your space and remove the summer elements first. Don’t think about redecorating when you’re not even looking at the blank space.

In most cases, once you remove the summer accessories, the existing faux greenery and all your other plants will look neutral. For some, this is the way they’re supposed to look, and for others, there might be potential for a seasonal refresh.

But just because you technically can change everything doesn’t mean you should.

What many find is that the porch or patio needs far fewer new elements than they expected because their foundational pieces (e.g., the artificial greenery or the outdoor furniture) were already doing the heavy lifting, and one or two well-chosen fall accessories in the right positions are enough to complete the transition.

What to Keep, What to Adjust, and What to Add

To make this concrete, here's how we frame the transition for a typical porch or patio:

  • Keep: Every UV-rated green wall panel, freestanding hedge, hanging garland, and potted plant you’ve bought, along with your outdoor furniture and layout. These don't need seasonal updating or replacements.

  • Adjust: Planter tones, textiles, and lighting. Swap pale planters for warmer-toned equivalents. Replace summer cushions and throws with heavier, richer textures. Shift outdoor lighting to amber warmth.

  • Add: A cluster of pumpkins or gourds at the base of your primary feature, fall-toned stems threaded into existing arrangements, lanterns or candle holders, a woven doormat, and maybe a wreath if you’re feeling bold.

That's it. The space is transitioned.

Finishing Thoughts

The summer-to-fall transition for your outdoor space is one of the most satisfying seasonal styling moments, and it's almost entirely achieved through what you add around your existing greenery, not what you replace.

The faux greenery that carried your porch through summer is already your best fall asset. It's evergreen, it's UV-stable, and it provides the backdrop that makes every seasonal accessory read better.

Layer the pumpkins, bring in the lanterns, thread in some fall-toned stems, and shift the lighting warmer. That's the transition; you don’t need to go on a shopping spree.

If you want to extend your outdoor greenery before fall entertaining season begins, or if you're starting from scratch and want a foundation that works across every season, our team can help you get it right from the first conversation.

FAQs

  1. Do I need to replace my faux plants for fall?

  • No. High-quality UV-resistant artificial plants are designed as permanent outdoor features because they hold their color and form across every season. The summer-to-fall transition is about layering warm-toned accessories, adjusting planters and lighting, and adding small things around your existing greenery.

  1. What fall accessories work best with artificial green walls?

  • Pumpkins and gourds at the base, lanterns flanking the feature, fall-toned stems threaded into the panel foliage, warm-toned textiles, and amber lighting. These elements contrast beautifully against deep green and look great for fall.

  1. Can outdoor faux plants handle fall weather?

  • Yes, provided they're UV-rated for outdoor use. Faux plants with UV-resistant materials can endure prolonged sun exposure and brave varying temperatures with little to no wear and tear. Our outdoor range uses UVTex inhibitors bonded within the LDPE leaf material and is designed for permanent outdoor installation across all seasons.

  1. How do I add fall color to an existing faux green wall?

  • Thread fall-toned artificial stems into the panel foliage by pressing them in and securing them with zip ties. You don’t need to glue or nail anything.

  1. Should I bring my outdoor faux plants inside for fall and winter?

  • For UV-rated outdoor products, there's no need because they're designed for year-round outdoor exposure. Depending on temperature and weather conditions, some products may be more vulnerable to extreme temperatures, but our UVTex-certified outdoor range is rated for the full range of US fall and winter conditions in most regions. In any case, we suggest checking the specific product page for any notes or talking to our team about your needs.
