Ordering artificial plants for a commercial space is not the same as buying a few pieces for a home.

The scale is different. The compliance requirements are different. The brand stakes are higher. And when an order arrives, and something is off, the consequences are felt across your timeline and your budget.

Our expert plant stylists consult with commercial clients across the US every week. We’ve worked with restaurants, hotels, corporate offices, retail chains, dental clinics, fitness studios, and more.

And before the start of every project, there are a few things you and the team working on your renovation should sort out.

If you want to see what they are, keep reading.

5 Questions for Commercial Fit-Outs With Artificial Plants

Over our 20+ years of experience, we’ve outlined a few important questions you need to ask during your consultation. And if you don’t, we’ll ask them for you:

Question 1: Is this product rated for my environment?

What it means: Indoor-grade and outdoor-grade artificial plants are not interchangeable. Using an indoor product in a high-UV or weather-exposed environment can be an expensive mistake in a commercial fit-out because it can begin to fade within months. For a business, that's a brand problem.

What to look for: Any product destined for an outdoor space should carry verified UV resistance. At Designer Plants, our UV-certified range uses proprietary UV-Tex technology built into the material at the manufacturing stage, and every UV-rated product is clearly badged on its product page.

Question 2: Does this product meet fire code for commercial spaces?

What it means: In the US, commercial spaces, particularly hospitality venues, retail environments, healthcare facilities, and multi-occupancy buildings, are subject to fire safety codes that regulate interior materials, including decorative elements like artificial plants. While this may vary, most states are governed by the NFPA 701.

A commercial fit-out using non-compliant materials can result in failed inspections, required removal, and in some cases, liability exposure.

What to look for: Products that carry verified fire-resistance certification tested to recognised commercial standards. Our FireTex fire-resistant range is specifically engineered for commercial environments where compliance is non-negotiable. These are not standard products with a fire-retardant spray applied. They’re purpose-built with fire-resistant materials throughout.

For California clients: State fire codes (CAL FIRE / Title 19) have specific requirements around flame spread ratings for interior commercial materials. If you're fitting out a space in California, this is especially critical. Our California installer partners are familiar with local compliance requirements and can advise accordingly.

Question 3: How many panels do I need and how do I calculate?

What it means: Ordering too few panels means a mid-project scramble, while ordering too many may tie up the budget and create storage headaches. And for large green wall installations, getting the panel count wrong affects the entire installation plan.

How to calculate it: For vertical garden wall panels, each standard panel covers 11 square feet (40" × 40"). To estimate your panel count, measure the total wall area in square feet, then divide by 11. Add 10% as a buffer for cuts, corners, and any irregular wall shapes. You can easily do this with our built-in panel calculator on all product pages:

For boxwood hedge panels and privacy screens, factor in the frame or planter system as well, as the structural setup affects how panels interlock and align.

For freestanding plants and trees like palms, topiaries, and statement pieces, think in terms of zones rather than units. A hotel lobby might need 3 anchor plants (large-scale statement pieces at entry points) plus 6 secondary fillers (mid-height plants to create depth and flow).

Question 4: Does the aesthetic match our brand?

What it means: Product photography is taken in controlled conditions with professional lighting. Your space isn't. The way a panel reads under your commercial lighting can be significantly different from how it appears on screen.

The right greenery for your brand isn't about what looks attractive. It needs to communicate the right things to your customers and clients. A law firm reception area, a cocktail bar, and a children's dental clinic all have very different requirements, not just aesthetically, but in terms of the psychological signals the environment sends.

What to look for: During your consultation, we’ll ask to see:

  • Your brand color palette and interior finishes

  • The formality level of the environment

  • The viewing distance

  • Whether you need a statement feature or a background element

Research consistently supports what we see in practice: biophilic design elements, including high-quality artificial greenery, measurably improve how customers perceive a brand's quality and professionalism.

A Harvard Business Review analysis on workplace and retail environments found that environment design is one of the most underutilized levers in brand experience.

Question 5: Have I spoken to an expert before placing a large order?

What it means: Commercial clients frequently arrive at checkout with a full cart, a project timeline, and a budget locked in, having made every product and quantity decision independently. When something goes wrong (and in large orders, something almost always does) there's no recourse except to absorb the cost.

The entire point of our free design consultation is to be the expert voice in your process before you commit, not after. Our team can do this remotely for commercial clients across the US, via video call, email brief, or phone.

A consultation covers:

  • Environment and compliance assessment

  • Product selection based on your aesthetic brief

  • Accurate quantity calculation for your square footage

  • Density and layout recommendations

  • Installation pathway advice (DIY or professional installation)

  • Honest advice on what will and won't work

Why it matters: Getting the specification right the first time is where the real ROI of expert advice is realized. The consultation is free. The expertise behind it is not something you can replicate with a product filter. 15 minutes with our team can prevent 90% of the mistakes clients make when shopping independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What types of commercial spaces do you work with?

  • We work with clients across hospitality (hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes), corporate offices, retail, healthcare, fitness studios, real estate, and more. If your business has a physical space that customers or employees experience, faux greenery can play a role. Explore our artificial green walls for business page or restaurant and cafe guide for more.

  1. Do you offer samples before I commit to a large order?

  • Yes. We offer samples of our green wall panels so you can assess texture, color, and density in your actual space before placing a full order. This is what we strongly recommend for any large commercial project.

  1. Can I install artificial green walls myself, or do I need a contractor?

  • Both are possible. Our panels use an interlocking system designed for straightforward installation. For larger commercial installs, we have professional installer partners in California, Texas, Los Angeles, and New York. Your consultation will help determine the right approach for your project.

  1. How long do commercial-grade artificial plants last?

  • Our commercial-grade products are built to last 5+ years in outdoor environments and up to 15 years indoors with basic maintenance. See our full warranty details for specifics by product range.

  1. Is there a minimum order for commercial projects?

  • No minimum order requirement. Whether you need two panels for a feature wall or 200 for a multi-site rollout, the process and the consultation are the same. For very large or multi-location projects, ask about our custom sourcing options during your consultation.
