How We Turned a Bare Industrial Ceiling Into a Canopy

Discuss Your Project

Project Location

Hospitality space

Application:

Commercial

Key Outcome:

  • A bare, dark industrial ceiling transformed into a full overhead canopy
  • A ceiling element that needs no ongoing maintenance or costs
  • A permanent installation that won’t need replacements

Before & After Transformation

Before: a dark-painted industrial ceiling with exposed steel trusses, functional pendant lighting, and nothing overhead worth looking at. The restaurant had character at bench and table level. Above head height, it was a Colorbond box.

After: the ceiling is replaced by a dense canopy of layered artificial fern fronds and trailing garlands. Rattan globe pendant lights hang at different heights through the foliage, their warm filament glow illuminating the greenery from within. The effect is a garden overhead.

The Client Challenge

The venue had invested in the right furniture, the right lighting concept, and the right material palette at floor and table level. The ceiling was the unresolved element because it was dark, flat, and doing nothing for the atmosphere the rest of the fit-out was working toward.

  • The ceiling was inaccessible for any live planting solution. It had no irrigation system, no structural drainage, no weight-bearing capacity for soil, pots, or root systems
  • Any real plant would require grow lighting, watering with managed drainage, and specialist access for maintenance, none of which the venue could support
  • The brief was to make the ceiling feel like part of the design

The Design Objective

The brief was simple to state and difficult to execute: make the ceiling disappear into faux greenery, without adding ongoing obligations to the operations team.

  • Cover the full ceiling area between the dark timber-framed grid so that no section of the industrial ceiling remained visible from seated height
  • Work with the existing lighting concept, as the pendant cluster was already planned; the greenery needed to frame and enhance it
  • Use fire-retardant product, which is a legal requirement for any decorative material installed overhead in a licensed commercial dining environment

The Solution and Key Benefits

We layered the installation in two passes. First, we built the base coverage using fern garlands. The fern creates the floor of the canopy: deep green, directional, and naturalistic. Then we layered long trailing ivy garlands at varying drop lengths through the fern base, allowing them to hang downward through the rattan globe lights. This is what creates the sense of a living canopy: the garlands drop at different lengths, the lights sit at different sizes and heights, and the composition looks like organic movement instead of grid repetition.

Why Artificial is a Practical Option:

A real fern or trailing plant on a ceiling requires: suspended irrigation with managed drainage (to prevent drip onto diners), grow lighting calibrated to the ceiling height, weekly access for maintenance and dead-leaf removal, structural assessment of load-bearing capacity for wet soil and pots, and ongoing pest and fungal management in an enclosed warm space.

This is the reason that even the most ambitious live ceiling installation can fail. The artificial version delivers the same visual result permanently, from installation day forward, with none of these obligations.

The Result

The ceiling is now the strongest design element in the space. Guests photograph it, staff photograph it, and the venue uses it across the marketing content it produces. The canopy created an atmosphere that the rest of the fit-out was pointing toward but couldn't quite reach on its own.

And the operations team has added exactly nothing to their routine. The ceiling in month 18 will look exactly as it did on installation day.

Why Artificial Greenery Worked Here

  • A live plant ceiling in this environment was structurally and operationally impossible
  • The fire-retardant product specification was required for overhead commercial use
  • The aesthetic brief can only be delivered by a permanent, maintenance-free solution

Expert tips from this installation:

- Start with the densest base layer first then add drop-length garlands through the structure

- Vary the drop lengths of trailing garlands deliberately, as even differences of 10” between neighboring pieces create organic depth

- All products used are fire retardant, which is non-negotiable for any overhead commercial installation in a licensed venue

Our fire-retardant hanging plants range carries the certification required for commercial dining environments. We always recommend confirming this protection before specifying overhead products.
